Did you know one of the best things you can do in Lanzarote is travel its roads by bicycle?

Discover the cycling route "El Golfo Road"

One of the most popular sports on the island of Lanzarote is cycling. Riding through seas of lava, volcanoes and feeling the sea while cycling is one of the best experiences you can have in Lanzarote if you are a lover of this sport. This souvenir wants you to relive all those sensations of energy and freedom.

The Golfo cycling route is ideal to contemplate the salt flats and Janubio beach from a unique perspective.

I'll tell you the best route to get the most out of your "El Golfo Road" experience.

Without a doubt, the route should start from Playa Blanca towards El Golfo. Along the old road, which is the designated cycling route, and just before you reach the junction that takes you to the village of El Golfo, you will find yourself at the highest point of the route.

Here you will enjoy stunning views of the Salinas de Janubio salt flats to your left and a sea of red volcanoes just ahead.

The El Golfo cycling route goes around the Volcanoes nature park. Riding through lava is an incredible feeling.

You continue the route in the village's direction of El Golfo leaving the salt flats on your left, and the red cone of the Bermeja volcano in the distance on your right. The slight descent of black asphalt allows you to relax for a moment and enjoy the salt flats up close. Perfectly aligned mounds of white salt surrounding the brightly coloured plots and the black sandy beach of Janubio in the background. A magical combination for the eye.

The road climbs to the right and suddenly, sheer cliffs of piercing black. The furious blue sea rises forcefully against the coastline, giving shape impact after impact to create the famous Hervideros. And just a few metres away, the red volcano appears again.

Black lava, blue sea and sky, and the red volcanoes make for an energetic landscape as you pedal along the road to El Golfo.

The slight descent, leaving the hot springs behind you, will take you to the foot of the Bermeja volcano, which you will see closely on your right. To your left is an incredible beach worthy of a science fiction film, Playa Bermeja.

After another ascent, you will reach the Charco de los Clicos, popularly known as Lago Verde (Green Lake). As you approach it, you will appreciate the black lava river that crosses the road, and the incredible coloured volcanic caldera where the lake is.

In short, if you are visiting Lanzarote on holiday and you are one of those who like to take a bike to go sightseeing at your own pace, this area is undoubtedly a must to enjoy quality tourism and get immersed in the identity of Lanzarote. Therefore, we had to create this magnet full of energy.

My experience cycling el Golfo road

I love this stretch from the salt flats to the Golfo because, despite the gradients, pedalling through this area is very dynamic and energetic.

In my opinion, "El Golfo road" is the cycling section of Lanzarote with the most contrasting colours.

Blues, whites, pure blacks, intense reds and browns, but what I remember most from this experience is when we reached the point where we first saw the hot springs. There, the micro-particles of the waves crashing on the cliff reach the road, slightly wetting your face, and giving you a whiff of the sea.

Now you know how to do the Gulf route by bicycle, but if you want to know other routes and plans that Lanzarote can offer, do not miss the articles and tourist guides on the blog.

The colourful salt flats on the left of the road, before the energetic hot springs, and a black sea of lava with the red Berjema volcano on the right are the elements that could not be missing in this magnet-shaped souvenir of El Golfo Road.
